How to play Feed the Music Monster piano sight-reading games:
Materials Needed:
- The PDF download, including the monster and monster melody cards
- White card stock (or printer paper is fine)
- Scissors or paper cutter
- Laminator and laminating sheets (optional)
- Tape or glue
- A gift bag, cereal box, or paper grocery bag approximately the height and width of the monster
- A second bag, cereal box, or other container
Preparing the Piano Sight-Reading Games:
- Print and cut out the monster image
- Laminate if desired
- Cut out the hole for the monster’s mouth (or use a craft blade to cut a slit wide enough for the music monster cards to pass through)
- Trace the monster’s mouth onto the gift bag, cereal box, or paper grocery bag
- Cut out the mouth shape from the gift bag, or a slit wide enough for the monster cards to pass through
- Attach the monster to the gift bag, cereal box, or paper grocery bag, aligning the openings for the mouth
- Or put the monster’s mouth above the rim of the bag if you prefer not to cut your gift bag
- Print, laminate if desired, and cut out the melody cards
Game Option #1: Teacher and Student: Ear Training
- Place the cards into the second bag (the one without the monster on it) and shake to shuffle
- The student draws 2 cards
- The teacher plays the melody on one of the cards
- If the student correctly chooses which melody the teacher played, the student feeds that card to the monster and puts the other card back into the shuffle bag
- If the student chooses incorrectly, both cards go back into the shuffle bag
- Continue playing until you run out of time or all the cards have been fed to the monster
Game Option #2: Student Only: Sight-Reading
- Place the cards into the second bag (the one without the monster on it) and shake to shuffle
- The student draws a card and plays the melody
- If the student plays the melody correctly, the student feeds the card to the monster
- If the student plays the card incorrectly, the card goes back into the shuffle bag
- The student continues playing until all the cards have been fed to the monster, or until you run out of time
Storing and Organizing the Piano Sight-Reading Games
I love storing these game cards and music monster cut-outs in colorful 4×6 photo boxes like these (affiliate link). They are my favorites because they’re the perfect size, and the colors are vibrant and fun!
