If you have young beginning piano students who are struggling with the concept of line notes and space notes, I have a teaching tip for you that you are going to love.
A lot of times we use words like "on a line" or "in a space", or "on a space" and these descriptive phrases can be very confusing.
So I prefer not using those kinds of words at all, and I simply refer to the notes as "line notes" and "space notes" from the very first time I introduce them.
I also use my hands and my face to show my students what a line note looks like, and what a space note looks like. This clears things up for them and they are never confused about line notes and space notes again!

Once upon a time, there was a sweet little girl in my piano studio who just couldn’t keep her fingers out of her nose.
We spent a large part of every lesson running back and forth to the bathroom so she could wash her hands over and over and over again, every. single. week.
Until one day, when I had a fabulous idea..… The magic sticky note!
When she was playing piano with one hand, I asked her to hold the magic sticky note with the other hand.
I told her she had to hold onto it and take really good care of it with one hand while her other hand was playing the piano.
And guess what… problem solved!

Learning piano keys from the very first piano lesson helps new students feel successful and comfortable at the piano, even though there are so many keys! My favorite piano key to teach first? D! "Hey diddle diddle, the D is in the middle!" (of the 2 black keys). After I teach the chant, we use it as a call and response. The little ones love it! 😁 🎵⠀
