Piano Recommendations for Piano Lessons

Students who sign up for piano lessons need an appropriate instrument for regular home practice.

All students need either an acoustic piano that is tuned at least once a year (it is very discouraging for your child to play an out-of-tune instrument!), or a digital piano (not a keyboard) for daily home practice.

Providing a sub-par instrument is like having your child go to baseball practice with an oven mitt instead of a baseball glove. An appropriate instrument makes a world of difference in setting your child up for success in piano lessons.

Acoustic Piano Requirements

An acoustic piano that is in great condition and tuned regularly (once a year) is preferred, but digital pianos are becoming better and better, and I am happy to recommend the brands you’ll see below.

The sound and touch of a nice acoustic piano cannot be replicated by an affordable digital instrument.

Students can make better progress in their musicality when learning on an acoustic piano. Baby grand pianos, grand pianos, and hybrid pianos are beautiful and wonderful to play, but are not required.

  • Upright pianos and studio pianos are highly preferred over spinet pianos
  • Must be in great condition
  • Must be tuned yearly, and I’ll be glad to recommend a piano technician
  • Pedals must be functioning properly
  • Bench of an appropriate height (An adjustable bench is preferred but not required. See below for options.)
  • Located in an area of the home that is free of distractions and promotes consistent practice

Digital Piano Requirements

A digital piano is acceptable if it meets the following requirements:

  • 88 keys
  • Touch sensitive
  • Weighted keys
  • Sustain/damper pedal that is attached to the instrument
  • Bench of an appropriate height (an adjustable bench is preferred but not required)
  • Entirely self-contained or on a keyboard stand (not a table or desk)
  • Located in an area of the home that is free of distractions and promotes consistent practice

Adjustable Piano Benches

There are so many different adjustable piano bench options available. I have an adjustable duet artist bench that I highly recommend. I have loved and enjoyed this bench for many years. Melody’s adjustable piano bench.

Here are lots of adjustable piano benches to choose from if you want a more streamlined size and smaller price point: More adjustable piano benches with built-in storage.

Best Digital Piano Brands

  • Yamaha
  • Roland
  • Casio

These are the 3 top digital piano brands that most piano teachers recommend.

Do not purchase a Donner or other cheap instrument labeled “digital piano”. These instruments are basically “toy keyboards” and are not good for the long-term success of piano students.
