More About the Music Spelling Bee Ledger Lines Note Reading Games

This ledger lines note reading game gives advancing piano students a fun way to review treble and bass clef notes up to 3 ledger lines above and below the staff.

Four-letter music spelling words created from the letters of the music alphabet are shown above or below the treble or bass staff: ACED,  BEAD, and CAFE, for example.

Students figure out the word, roll the dice, and move forward on the game board. The first student to reach the beehive wins!

Use these ledger lines note reading games instead of traditional music notes flash cards to drill ledger line notes in an engaging way.

Your piano students will have tons of fun in piano lessons while becoming more confident in their ability to identify ledger line notes with this interactive teen-approved music activity.

How to Play the Music Spelling Bee Ledger Lines Note Reading Games

  1. Print the pages you need onto white card stock and cut out the cards. Laminate if you like.
  2. Place the Bee Cards on the game board, and place the ledger line cards face down beside the game board.
  3. Roll the dice to see who goes first, or let your student go first if the two of you are playing during a private lesson.
  4. Draw a music spelling word card.
  5. The student will identify the music spelling word that is indicated by the notes on the staff.
    1. The student can either say the letters to figure out the word or write the word onto their score card.
    2. *Pro tip: Laminate the score cards or place them into a plastic page protector so they can be erased and reused throughout the game.
  6. The student rolls the dice and moves forward on the game board. I usually use a single die to make the game last just a little longer.
  7. If a student lands on a flower, the student will draw a Bee Card to see what to do (fly ahead to another flower, trade places with another player, go back one space, etc.)
  8. The first person to reach the beehive wins!
  9. Students will enjoy reviewing ledger line notes above and below the staff in a fun, hands-on way!
  10. They will feel very accomplished by their ability to figure out the musical spelling words as they play these engaging and interactive ledger lines note reading games!
