Description

Review right hand, left hand, finger numbers, and piano keys in a snap by playing a quick round of my beginning piano students’ favorite piano keys game Zombie Says! Playing Zombie Says is like playing the fun childhood game “Simon Says”, but with piano keys, finger numbers, and right hand and left hand.

A fun bonus is that students walk like zombies as they play the correct piano keys! Zombie Says can be played with multiple students in a group piano lesson, music class, or music camp, or it can be played with one student during a private piano lesson. It can even be played during online piano lessons!

This zombie game for beginning piano is perfect for Halloween, but it can be played any time of year. Watch the video to learn how to play.

How to Play Zombie Says Beginning Piano Keys Game

  1. Print the pages you need onto white card stock (or colorful card stock if you are printing the black and white cards) and cut out the cards. Laminate if desired.
  2. Pro tip: If you want to save paper, print 2 pages per sheet of paper, and there will be 8 cards per sheet of paper instead of 4. See the image below.
  3. Use as many cards as you like for the time allotted.
  4. Shuffle the cards and the teacher (or another student) can be the leader, or “Zombie”.
  5. The leader draws a card and reads what the card says. For example, “Zombie says walk like this and… with LH finger 3, play B.”
  6. The students follow that directive and play any B with LH finger 3 while walking like the zombie on that card.
  7. Anyone who follows the directive incorrectly is out of that round.
  8. Additionally, there are several cards that don’t say “Zombie Says” on them. The leader will simply read the card. For example, “Walk like this and… with LH finger 3, play B.”
  9. Any students who follow that directive are out of that round because the directive didn’t include the words “Zombie Says”.
  10. Continue playing for as long as you have time, or until only one player is left. That player is the winner.

Storing and Organizing the Game Cards

I love storing these game cards in colorful 4×6 photo boxes like these (affiliate link). They are my favorites because they’re the perfect size, and the colors are vibrant and fun!

Why I Created This Beginning Piano Keys Game

I had an adorable kindergarten student who just had her eighth piano lesson. She was still having a little bit of trouble with her finger numbers (especially LH 4, 3, 2 and RH 2, 3, 4) and remembering which hand was her right hand and which was her left hand. But she does extremely well when I ask her to play, for example, all the D’s on the piano.

I decided to play an impromptu game of “Simon Says…” with her, incorporating right and left hands, finger numbers, and piano keys, and she loved it! She was great at playing the correct piano keys, so that was very motivating for her, and she had to think about her right hand and left hand and finger numbers, which was also a great review!

And that’s where Zombie Says Beginning Piano Keys Game came from. I hope it can be helpful (and fun!) for your beginning piano students as well!
