My name is Melody, and I’m totally obsessed with emojis! 😍 🎉 💕 🙌🏻 I’m guessing I’m not alone…. Right?
What’s an emoji? We use them all the time, but may not really know what they are. An emoji is “a small digital image or icon used to express an idea, emotion, etc., in electronic communication”. That is the Google search definition. Here’s what they look like: 😀 ☕️ 🏈 ✈️
What do emojis mean? Emojipedia can help you with that! Most of them are pretty self-explanatory, but if you’re looking for specific information on each emoji, check out the Emojipedia.
Why would we want to use them? From PsychologyToday.com, we use emojis to “increase the precision and nuance of our often super-brief and open-to-misunderstanding communications. They are mostly understood in context. They help us to add tone and clarity to our communication.”
Emojis are SUPER easy to use when you’re on your phone, but what if you’re on your Mac and want to insert an emoji How do you do that? Maybe you already know how to do this, and I’m super-late to the party! 😄 But when I was trying to insert an emoji into a Google Sheets document I was working on this morning, I couldn’t figure out how to do it. I did a quick search, the 💡 (lightbulb) came on for me, so I wanted to share the ❤️ (love) with you!
How to insert emojis when using your Mac:
Step 1: Place your cursor where you would like to insert the emoji.
Step 2: Type Control+Command+Spacebar all at the same time, and the emoji menu will appear.
Step 3: Select “Emoji” in the left column.
Step 4: Select the category in the next column
Step 5: Scroll down until you find what you’re looking for
Step 6: Double-click the emoji you want to use, and ta-da! The emoji is magically inserted into whatever document you’re working on! 🎹
These screen shots were taken as I was typing this brief tutorial, so you can use emojis in WordPress, Keynote, Google Docs, Facebook, Instagram, wherever you’re typing when you’re on your Mac! This is a total game-changer for me, especially on Instagram, which I mainly visit and curate from my Mac! Windows friends, I am not a PC user, so I can’t say exactly how you would insert emojis on your PC, but I’m SURE there is a really simple way. A quick Google search can help!
